Somewhere between raising kids, work, school schedules, laundry, grocery shopping, appointments, workouts, and the never-ending list of things that need to get done, it becomes incredibly easy for a marriage to turn into a partnership focused mostly on managing life.
And I think that’s exactly why date night becomes even more important after 40.
At this stage of life, my husband and I don’t necessarily need elaborate dates or romantic weekends away every week. Sometimes what we really need is simply a reason to get dressed up, leave the responsibilities at home for a few hours, sit across from each other at dinner, and remember that before all of the schedules and responsibilities—we were a couple.
Date Night Gives You Time to Actually Talk
At home, conversations can quickly become: Who is driving? What time is practice? Did someone do their homework? What do we need from the grocery store?
Going out together creates a completely different environment. There’s time to talk without simultaneously folding laundry, answering emails, or thinking about what needs to happen next.
It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant. Dinner, drinks, a concert, a walk somewhere beautiful, or even grabbing dessert together can create that little pocket of time that’s just yours.
And yes, I also think getting dressed up for each other is part of the fun.

Date Night Outfit #1: Elevated Denim
Not every date night requires a dress.
I love this combination of dark wide-leg jeans and a fitted black bodysuit because it feels sexy and sophisticated without looking overly dressed up. The sheer sleeves elevate a basic black top, while the dark denim makes the whole outfit feel polished.
Add black pointed-toe boots, gold hoop earrings and a structured black bag and you have an outfit that works beautifully for dinner, cocktails or a casual upscale restaurant.

Getting Ready Can Be Part of the Date
There’s also something to be said for the actual process of getting ready.
When you’re over 40 and juggling a million responsibilities, there are plenty of days when fashion is purely practical. I’m dressing for errands, school drop-off, working from home or getting a workout in.
Date night gives me an excuse to open my closet and ask, “What do I actually feel pretty in?”
Put on the dress. Do your hair. Wear the heels. Pull out the bag that doesn’t hold snacks and random things for everyone else. 😂
It’s not about dressing for anyone else’s approval. It’s about having those occasions where you get to enjoy that side of yourself again.

Date Night Outfit #2: Romantic Burgundy Dress
For a dressier dinner, I LOVE a romantic midi dress.
This burgundy off-the-shoulder floral dress is such a gorgeous option for fall and winter date nights. The fitted silhouette feels feminine while the longer length keeps the outfit elegant.
I’d pair it with simple black heels, gold hoops and a small black crossbody bag. Because the dress already makes a statement, you really don’t need many accessories.

You Don’t Have to Wait for a Special Occasion
This may be the biggest thing I’ve realized: the date itself can be the occasion.
We tend to dress up for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and vacations. But you don’t need an event on the calendar to make reservations somewhere you love and have dinner together.
In fact, ordinary date nights may be even more important because they’re about making your relationship a priority during normal life—not only celebrating it on anniversaries.

Date Night Outfit #3: Feminine Polka Dots
This outfit might be my favorite because it’s feminine without feeling overly formal.
A black-and-white off-the-shoulder bodysuit paired with a polka-dot lace midi skirt creates such a pretty silhouette. The bow detail gives the outfit a little romantic, Parisian feeling that I love for date night.
Finish it with delicate black heels, gold hoops and a small black handbag.

Date Night After 40 Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
I think we sometimes make date night harder than it needs to be.
You don’t need the perfect restaurant. You don’t need an entire free weekend. You don’t need a babysitter until midnight. And you definitely don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars.
You just need intentional time together.
Even a couple of hours can break up the routine of constantly being parents, workers, chauffeurs, cooks, organizers and problem-solvers.
Keep Dating Your Husband
Life after 40 is busy. In some ways, it feels busier than ever.
That’s exactly why I don’t want to wait until life magically slows down to make time for my marriage—because I’m beginning to realize it probably isn’t going to slow down anytime soon.
So make the reservation. Pick an outfit that makes you feel amazing. Put on your favorite perfume. Leave the everyday responsibilities behind for a couple of hours.
And keep dating your husband.
Because after years together, date night isn’t about pretending you’re newlyweds again. It’s about remembering that underneath everything you’ve built together, you’re still two people who chose each other—and it’s worth continuing to make time for that.
