One of my favorite things about fall fashion is finding ways to keep wearing the pieces I already loved all summer. You definitely don’t have to pack away your pretty floral skirts the second the temperatures start to drop! With a few cozy layers and richer fall accessories, a lightweight maxi skirt can easily transition into the new season.

This outfit is such a good example of that effortless summer-to-fall style. The combination of the feminine floral maxi skirt, chunky knit vest, brown boots, and oversized neutral bag feels cozy and autumn-inspired without looking too heavy.

Start With a Feminine Floral Maxi Skirt

The floral maxi skirt is really the foundation of this outfit. I love the soft cream background and delicate floral print because it still feels feminine and romantic, but the neutral colors make it incredibly easy to style for fall.

A flowy maxi skirt is also one of those pieces you can wear almost year-round. In summer, pair it with a tank top and sandals. Once fall arrives, simply swap those pieces for knits, boots, and warmer accessories.

This is exactly the kind of versatile piece I look for when shopping because I want to be able to create more than one season of outfits with it.

Add a Chunky Knit Vest

The brown chunky knit vest instantly changes the entire feel of the skirt.

Instead of looking like a summer outfit, the rich chocolate brown gives it that warm, cozy fall aesthetic. I especially love the oversized gold buttons because they add just enough detail to make the vest feel elevated.

And sweater vests are perfect for those early fall days when it’s cool in the morning but still warm in the afternoon. You get the texture and coziness of a sweater without committing to long sleeves.

Later in the season, you could even layer a fitted long-sleeve tee or lightweight turtleneck underneath.

Brown Boots Make It Feel Like Fall

If there is one easy trick for transitioning dresses and skirts into fall, it’s add boots.

The chocolate brown pointed-toe boots coordinate beautifully with the sweater vest and immediately make the floral skirt feel more seasonal. Brown is also having such a moment for fall, and I love how much softer it can look than black when paired with cream and other warm neutrals.

You could recreate this look with ankle boots, knee-high boots, western boots, or even a pair of brown suede boots.

Finish With a Neutral Oversized Bag

The oversized cream tote keeps the outfit light and balances all of the darker brown tones.

I also love a large tote for an everyday fall outfit because it’s actually practical. There’s plenty of room for your wallet, sunglasses, makeup bag, water bottle—and all the random things we somehow end up carrying around!

The cream color ties back into the skirt while still allowing the brown vest and boots to be the statement pieces.

The Accessories

A few simple accessories finish everything off without competing with the outfit. Layered gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, and oversized sunglasses give the look that polished, put-together feeling.

Because the clothing already has plenty of texture and pattern, you really don’t need a lot of accessories here.

Where I Would Wear This Outfit

This would be such a cute outfit for brunch with friends, a fall farmers market, lunch, shopping, a casual date, family photos, a winery day, or simply walking around town with a coffee.

It has that effortless fall outfit feeling where you’re comfortable but still look completely put together.

More Ways to Style This Skirt for Fall

The best part is that the skirt can create so many different outfits. Try it with a cream oversized sweater and sneakers for something casual, a fitted brown turtleneck and tall boots when the weather gets cooler, a denim jacket and ankle boots for an everyday look, or a leather jacket for a little more edge.

You could even add a belt over a sweater to create more definition at the waist.

The Perfect Early Fall Outfit

This is exactly the kind of transitional outfit I love because it proves you don’t need an entirely new wardrobe every season.

Take a feminine summer piece you already love, add a chunky knit, bring in some rich chocolate brown tones, and finish everything with boots. Suddenly that summer maxi skirt feels completely ready for crisp fall days.
